TOYS, VEGGIES, BUTTERFLIES & GEOCACHING – BEHIND THE PAW #4

Gizmo here… I want to thank Jodi of Heart Like a Dog for inviting  me to co-host this week’s Follow-Up Friday Blog Hop, the blog hop that lets you wrap up your week and leads you right into the weekend…It’s great to be invited back as a co-host by a blogger I respect and follow. Jodi’s posts are thoughtful and provoke great discussions. Her post “Speeding is Against the Law” is one of my all-time favorites. If you haven’t yet, make sure and check her out today.

follow-up-friday

First, as an update on Momz’ Pet Blogger Challenge Post, one of her wishes is coming true. She’s purchased me my own domain name, and with the help of her WordPress Guru she’s taking my blog self-hosted. She’s meeting with the Guru on Monday morning, so cross your fingers for us that it all goes smoothly. If we seem to be MIA for a day or two don’t worry, we’ll be right back.

On Monday I ranted about treats made in China that are endorsed by the AKC and a program called “dog-sharing”. I also asked for help in figuring out my new puzzle toy. We all seem to agree that the AKC deserves a huge “thumbs down”, but there were some interesting points brought out on “dog-sharing”. While I saw that it might have some positive uses, overall my opinion remains that it’s a bad idea for the dogs. We dogs thrive on stability and consistency and “dog-sharing” provides neither. I did get some help from Dakota of Dakota’s Den who pointed me towards a video he’d done showing how to play with my toy. Momz and I watched it a few times, then I got to work and by the next night I’d mastered that toy (and maybe ate just a few too many treats Winking smile ).  Thanks Dakota!

Tuesday Momz shared her newest S.O.M.P. recipe for Veggie Brownies made from the pulp left over after she juices. Momz loves making “something from nothing” and coming up with the unexpected and this recipe is a prime example. I wasn’t sure at first, but now I love them. Your comments were split…those who already liked veggies said it sounds great and they hope they get to try some soon. Those who won’t eat veggies thought this was a cool/sneaky way of getting you dogs to eat some veggies.

Wednesday’s video of the Gulf Fritillary butterfly building his cocoon was a hit. Like us, you all were amazed to see the process in action. Here’s three caterpillars that will become Monarch butterflies. They’re chowing down on the Asclepias (*VBP*) plants by our front steps. Momz grows them special for the Monarchs. Asclepias is both their host plant and their food plant. The Monarch lays its eggs on the stem of the asclepias, and when they hatch, the caterpillars eat the leaves of the plant.

Thursday was my long-promised Introduction to Geocaching. I packed a lot of material into that post, and I hope I didn’t confuse anyone. Geocaching is a sport for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, loves hiking with their dogs and has fun solving puzzles. Momz and here as your geocaching gurus, so if you’re interested in giving it a try and have questions, please ask and we’ll get you going. We’ve got interviews with geocaching dogs coming up over the next few months ranging from folks just starting out who have found one cache, to geodogs who have been at it for years and have visited many thousands of caches.

I need to catch up on my Thank You’s today.

I’ve received two coveted ascriptions (*VBP*) for the Leibster Award. These come from my great pal The Kirbster of Kirby’s Dawg Blog and a pair of the greatest comedians in Blogville, Mollie & Alfie.  The rules for this one include answering a lot of fun questions, and since nothing much has changed for me recently, you can read all my answers here.

My lovely new furriend, the exceedingly cute Vanilla Bean from Twinkle with the feisty furballs has awarded me the wonderful Reality Blog Award. There’s questions for this one too, and my answers are here.

I choose today to pass these awards on to all my blogging pals. I love each and every one of you and just don’t want to choose, so know that I think you’re all “Keepin’  It Real” and that I’m here to “Share the Love”. These are posted on my Awards Page so just grab the award logo and display it proudly as a gift from your pal Gizmo Geodog.

30/30 Challenge Ticker:

Thank to Savannah’s Paw Tracks , Texas and our pal Jetty for their cool new Vocabulary Building Project blog hop. Check it out…lots of great new words to learn there.

I care about all my brofurs & sisfurs who haven't found their own forever homes yet, & raise funds to help them whenever I can. 2. Great round up of your week. Thank goodness Dakota helped you get to those pesky treats!

    • Gizmo says:

Yes, it was a good thing he gave me a paw up…I got so good at it that Momz had to put it away for a day so I wouldn’t get bored with it.

  9. Carol Bryant says:

Great weekly round up and you are super busy! Happy Weekend!

    • Gizmo says:

Seems like there’s always something going on around here…Funny thing is that I haven’t had my car all week so I feel like I’ve fallen behind…Looking forward to going someplace fun this weekend

  10. Jodi says:

Thank you so much for co-hosting FUF, it’s always wonderful to have you on board and you did a great post with a recap of the week.

Congratulations on your awards, I love how the blogville community is always showing the love. 🙂

I switched my free WP to self-hosted in August and after much crying on my part asked a web friend to help. She did it pretty quickly and then I went in to do something else and I needed to transfer a few more items and it went like clockwork. Best of luck in that and have a great weekend.

    • Gizmo says:

Thank you Jodi…I enjoy co-hosting with you and am happy to jump in when i can…I’ve heard horror stories, but they always seem to work out OK so I’ve crossed my fingers and am hoping for the best…If I’m back on Tuesday you’ll know all went well 🙂

  11. What a fun and packed week you had. You will love being self hosted, it’s the only way to fly.

    • Gizmo says:

Looking back it was a busy week…I am eager for self-hosting but just learned the downside…I’ll lose all my subscribers when I make the switch…I hope everyone will follow me over…Was that a problem for you?

  12. How cool that you’re moving forward with your Pet Blogger Challenge goals. I hope the transition is a smooth one and we’ll see you on the other side. Good luck!

    • Gizmo says:

“See you on the other side”…I like that…Yes, it’s a big step for me, but with my Guru moving away and plans shaping up it seems like the right time to make the jump…Wish me luck!

  13. Emmadog says:

Great week in review and congratulations on your awards!

  14. Hawk aka BrownDog says:

    Dinner time! Gotta GO!

    Y’all come back now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

    • Gizmo says:

I had some trouble with the code this morning too…had to play around with it a while to get it to work…I love the monarch caterpillars…I think they’re really pretty…Happy Weekend!

  15. Loy says:

Hey Gizmo, you’ve had a busy week! Hope you have a wonderful weekend, too!

  16. 2browndawgs says:

    Congrats on your awards.

Obviously I missed your post on the AKC treats the first time around. The AKC has from time to time licensed its name/logo for things related to dogs, such as leads, beds, toys, treats. It is no different than a sporting team licensing its logo for shirts, seat cushions or shot glasses. It is my understanding that it hires a company to find licensing opportunities.

Many of the delegates were not in favor of this licensing treats from China. But like any club (that is all AKC is, a club), it has a board that makes the decisions. I would not be surprised to see the board reevaluate licensing in the future based on delegate feed back.

Who ever is writing that puppy mill registrations pay for dog shows is dead wrong. People who enter shows pay for them and the clubs and their members putting on the show pay for them. I have to question where people get this info from. They have never been to a show or been a member of a club hosting an event. The clubs pay a fee to the AKC but the clubs putting on the event fund it through entry fees and we do some fund raising (like raffles to help pay for ribbons). So while it is true that registrations are declining, which is a function of the economy too, I can tell you that certain events (like hunt tests) are growing by leaps and bounds. There were so many entries at this year’s Master National they are talking about ways to limit entries. Our Club plans to limit entries in our tests next year. 🙂

If anything the AKC suffers what all large organizations suffer from…too much bureaucracy. They do need to curb it. The AKC is so much more than dog shows and registration fees. They also fund the Canine Health Foundation that does a lot of canine health research. It is expensive to do research. It benefits both purebred and mixed dogs. It can also offer valuable info for human research.

Sorry this is long. I just have issues when people make baseless claims (not you, the blog you linked to :)). I never knew how any of this stuff worked before I joined a couple of AKC clubs and got involved. 🙂

    • Gizmo says:

Thank you for your contribution to this discussion. I was hoping someone involved in AKC activities as you are would share an opoinion here. To be honest i don’t have a problem with the AKC endorsing products in general…it’s just that these treats are potentially harmful and endorsing them seems to contradict the good done by the Canine Health Foundation. I am well aware that entry fees to all AKC events provide a major source of income for the AKC. I love that your Hunt Tests are so heavily supported. Thirty years ago when I was competing that was not the case. Being in Florida our Winter test in January drew a lot of entries, with professional handlers bringing their kennels down South in Winter, but our Fall Test did not. I think it’s great that performance sports have gained so much in popularity. I would hope that the AKC reconsiders endorsing products that are potentially harmful. that would go some towards shining up an image that is currently a bit tarnished.

  17. I used to do Friday’s where I’d describe everything that went on during the week that I didn’t blog about. Don’t think I’d like veggie brownies. Loved the butterfly thingie. Have a great weekend.

  18. Cotton says:

Looks like you had a good week, yes? Caterpillars are good, they remind me of my caterpillar friend, Bruce!

  19. haopee says:

Hey Gizzy. It sounded like your week was pretty busy. I’ve never heard of geocaching before.. and the only time I have heard of the term caching is when I do something in the computer.

Dog sharing sounds awkward to me too.

    Huggies and Cheese,

    Haopee

  20. Great round-up Gizmo! You’ve had such a great week:-)

    • Gizmo says:

Thanks Misaki! Your nose painting on Sheila’s blog is so pretty…can’t wait to see how mine looks…Have a wonderful weekend & I hope you get more snow soon 🙂

  22. Busy week! And I thought I did a lot. Love the pre-butterflies. Congrats on the award!

  23. Mowzers, we hadz no idea that there were certain plants those caterpillars liked – OTHER than mom’s dill and parsley!! We’ve gotta try that plant out next spring to see if it’ll grow over here!

Sounds like a BUSY week for you guys – pawesome round-up!

    • Gizmo says:

Yes, each caterpillar/butterfly has a preferred food plant and a preferred host plant…Sometimes, like with the monarch, they’re the same and in others they differ…If you do get milkweed started it’ll last forever…Wehn the leaves are gone and the seed pods open and emmpty just cut it way back and it’ll grow back up again

  24. Debbie says:

Good luck with your move to self-hosted, Gizmo. I just did it myself and it went fairly well. Easier than I thought it would be, You’re going to love the freedom! 🙂

  25. Those are some really lovely pictures!

  26. Gizmo, congratulations on the domain name and all the awards!
Can’t wait to see your self-hosted bloggie!
